Lynn Canal is one of the deepest and longest fjords in the world, extending over 90 miles and reaching depths of more than 2,000 feet. This makes it not only a marvel of natural beauty but also a significant geological feature. Interestingly, despite its name, Lynn Canal is not a man-made canal but a natural fjord, created by the movement of glaciers over thousands of years. It was named by George Vancouver in honor of his birthplace, King's Lynn in Norfolk, England. The canal is a vital habitat for a diverse array of wildlife, including humpback whales, sea lions, and bald eagles, making it a prime spot for wildlife enthusiasts. Additionally, Lynn Canal serves as a crucial navigational route for ferries and ships, connecting the small, remote communities including Skagway and Haines along its shores to the larger Southeast Alaskan cities like Juneau, providing them with essential access to goods and services.
